Philipp Roidinger is a multi-awarded pianist, keyboardist, composer and psychologist. Musically, he was educated at the art and music academies in Linz (JIM), Vienna (MDW), Arnhem (ArtEZ) and Berlin (JIB), scientifically, at the University of Vienna and the TU Berlin. Since 2006, he has been working as freelance music artist in the field of contemporary African-American music styles – jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, neo-afrobeat and different club music genres – in Europe and USA. Moreover, he has been co-initiating interdisciplinary projects together with dancers, film makers, literati, actors and performance artists. Philipp is co-founder and musical director of the internationally renowned hip-hop group ‘The SWAG’ and the Berlin based ‘The SWAG JAM’ Sessions. He collaborated with artists and art institutions from all over the world, including William Pope.L, Dead Prez, Dub FX, Bilal, Jeru the Damaja, SAVVY Contemporary, Richard Howell, Ill Spokinn, 2face Idibia, Matador, Sido, Adel Tawil and Culcha Candela. In his career, he performed more than 1200 shows and he has been invited to numerous prestigious stages (e.g. Open Air Frauenfeld, Open Air Gampel, Jazzfestival Wien, Veltins-Arena, Olympia Stadion Berlin, Mercedes Benz Arena, Lanxess Arena Cologne, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, HAU Berlin, Festwochen Gmunden). As a researcher, his interests range from culture psychological questions to the embodied meaning of aesthetics. His recent study about musical improvisation won several prizes and has been published as monography by the Springer Fachmedien (2018). He is a loving father of three wonderful kids.
